The PCOS Plan: Prevent and Reverse Polycystic Ovary Syndrome through Diet and Fasting

New York Times bestselling author Dr. Jason Fung joins forces with naturopathic doctor Nadia Pateguana to offer methods to prevent and reverse PCOS through diet and intermittent fasting.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive disorder in the world, affecting an estimated eight to 20 percent of women of reproductive age, almost half of whom are unable to conceive. PCOS is also associated with increased risks of heart disease, ovarian and endometrial cancers, and type 2 diabetes.

In this clearly written guide, backed by science and personal experience, Drs. Jason Fung and Nadia Brito Pateguana identify the symptoms of PCOS and reveal its root cause: excess insulin. They then show how to prevent and reverse PCOS with a low-carb diet and intermittent fasting. As a bonus, fifty recipes and a variety of menu plans are included to put new knowledge into (delicious) practice.

Topics
Insulin
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels in the body. It allows cells to take in glucose from the bloodstream and use it as a source of energy. Insulin also helps store excess glucose in the liver for later use. In individuals with diabetes, either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the body's cells become resistant to the effects of insulin (Type 2 diabetes). As a result, blood sugar and insulin levels can become elevated, leading to various health complications.
Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It does not specify which foods to eat or avoid but rather focuses on when to eat them. The most common intermittent fasting methods involve daily fasting periods of 16 hours or longer.
PCOS
Ketogenic Diet
The ketogenic diet involves eating high fat, low carbs, and moderate protein. To be in ketosis, one must eat less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day.
